Sun Safety Keeps Families Safe and Happy

It can be a real challenge to figure out which sunscreen option is the best. Some people find themselves confused and wandering store aisles after hearing media reports about sunscreen.

Yet there are some tried-and-true standard rules that can help you and your family stay safe under the sun. One of the top things to keep in mind is that you’ll want to adhere to the directions on the sunscreen bottle and apply as directed in generous amounts.

Sun Safety Beyond Sunscreen

  • Stay in the shade during the sun’s peak hours - which generally range from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These are the top hours for exposure to UV rays that can damage your skin. Damage can occur even during cloudy conditions.
  • Wear clothing that can help you and your family stay safe. This includes long sleeves, sunglasses, pants and wide-brimmed hats.
  • Be sure to use sunscreen, and apply it according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Decoding Sunscreen Language

Top experts say to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This product is designed to protect your skin from the two different types of harmful UV rays - UVA and UVB.

UVA rays are known to penetrate deep into your skin, and they also can hamper your immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. The result of UVA rays can be sunspots and wrinkles on your skin. If you get too much exposure to both UVA and UVB rays your chance of skin tumors can increase.

Look for a sunscreen that offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
