The history of how golf began is very vague, however the game as we know it today originated in Scotland around the twelfth century. It is said that shepherds knocked stones into rabbit holes on the current site of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Golf is a sport of skill and accuracy whereby competing players or golfers use clubs in an attempt to hit balls into each hole on the golf course using the fewest number of strokes possible. Golf courses feature their own unique designs with either nine or eighteen holes with differing lengths and challenges. Golf balls are constructed from synthetic materials and aerodynamically-engineered with dimples to make them travel further than smooth balls. Golf shoes with metal or plastic spikes were designed specifically for the players to give them more traction. Golfers can either walk the course from one to the other or drive in a cart that is motorized. Many professional golfers use caddies. Caddies carry and manage the golfer’s equipment and offer advice to the golfer they are assisting.

The rules of golf are pretty much standard both with the United States Golf Association (USGA) and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (which was founded in 1754). The ethical standard of the rules is “fairness”. On the back of the official rule book it states: “Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair”. There are also guidelines for golfers called golf etiquette which covers a list of things like how fast to play, care of the golf course, safety and fairness.

People who play this game do so for the pure fun of it, however most golfers are extremely serious, avid players. These players are “recreational” players. Golf courses are located almost everywhere today, in both public and members-only private courses. Some people use golf as a social event to relax with friends or even to help close business negotiations. Because there are so many golf courses today, golfing establishments have been coming up with more attractions for the players. One such appealing feature is having a golf course close to office parks and having an executive or business layout whereby the course is shorter.

The Professional Golf Association (PGA), an independent tour organization, runs at least twenty professional golf tours. The association arranges events, finds sponsors and has control of the tours. The four most prestigious are The Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship. The most well-known tour is the PGA Tour and has first prizes of at least $800,000. The PGA European Tour is very prestigious and pulls in a lot of top professional golfers outside America. The International Federation of PGA Tours was founded in 1996 and has many countries as members. There are several senior tours for men fifty years old and older, the most popular being Champions Tour. The Senior PGA was founded in 1937, but did not become successful commercially until the first golf stars reached the significant age, namely Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

In 1950 The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) was organized by a group of thirteen women and to date is now the oldest continuing women’s professional sports organization in America. The LPGA runs a series of weekly golf tournaments for the more talented female golfers from all around the world. There are four major LPGA championships during the year and they are the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA Championship presented by Wegmans, the U.S. Women’s Open, and the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

While playing a full round of golf will take about four hours, countless hours are usually spent by aspiring players on putting courses and driving ranges. Golfers cannot always choose the time they’re on the golf course under the hot sun; therefore taking the best care possible to protect themselves from the over-exposure of the sun is essential. Take special care to remain hydrated throughout your round, especially if consuming alcohol as this speeds dehydration. Protecting your skin will require the application of a strong sunscreen every two hours in the sun. When applying the sunscreen, it is important that ears and the back of the neck cannot be overlooked. Wearing a wide brimmed hat will help keep the sun off the face and the back of the neck. Long sleeved shirts are best for coverage and definitely long pants. Additionally, clothes made of cotton, hemp and linen will help to keep the golfer cooler while protecting the skin. Enjoy your golf courses and games in the beautiful sunshine and get your best suntan, but please remember to protect yourself with suntan lotions and wear your hats & sunglasses.
